Bloating. Joint pain. Shortness of breath. Your physical looks. Horrible sleep. Perpetual exhaustion. Your overall poor state of health and fitness. These are the reasons why you decided on a lifestyle shift. To quote an overquoted quote, “You were sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

But, you set your vision and your goals. You lost weight. You got in shape. You went through a period of being nothing short of amazed at how great you felt and looked. You reached the magic number on the weigh scale. Now what?

My Greatest Weight Loss Habit: Night Fasting (Intermittent Fasting)

Over the last 30 years of my adult life, on more than one occasion I have found that I have let my health slip and my weight go up. Every single time I had success with burning off the pounds, it was in co-ordination with what I call Night Fasting.

This system is where I eat a healthy, nutritious meal between 8am and 10am and another between 3pm and 4pm. Each of these meals consists of what I can fit in a bowl size of my choosing. I currently use a standard soup bowl. My meals now are vegan, packed with alkaline forming nutrients and are delicious. Yours don’t have to be in order to benefit from this eating schedule.

It turns out, my idea wasn’t so original. Medical researchers have been on top of this for decades. They call it intermittent fasting, or simply IF. The specific schedule I have is known as the 16/8 or Leangains Protocol. It basically states that you feed over a period of eight hours and fast for 16.

Not Eating For 16 Hours Seems Excessive!

I am going to get more into writing about my process in the next article. This one is a look at what I wrote on October 20, 2020 when I resolved to have a lifestyle shift and begin my quest for optimum health and fitness.

Just being a vegetarian and exercising what not enough. I was not losing weight. In fact, it seemed like I was on a gradual but continual climb in the fat department. I decided that day to change. A month later, there have been no obstacles or temptations to return to my previous way of life. I have had considerable success in transforming my health and fitness.

Here’s What I Wrote

Goal

180 lbs. by December 31, 2020 (my first weight in was 209 – today, November 16, it is 191).

Update – Weight Loss Goal Achieved!

A Man’s Quest For Optimum Health

The content from this site can now be found at a subdomain on our main site “It’s About Travelling”. Go there now: Optimum Health. Optimum Travel.

Over my 52 years on this planet, I’ve never experienced what could be called ‘poor health’. As a child, I was involved in sports year round, playing hockey in the winter and baseball in the summer. In high school, I added cross country running, track and field and a bit of football.

As an adult, I pushed my running and even completed a full marathon (the Flying Pig in Cincinnati, Ohio). When my achilles got the best of me in my 40’s, the running disappeared but a return to hockey filled the gap. This is a sport I still play today (although on pause due to the COVID-19 shitstorm).

So, I lead an active lifestyle. I exercise regularly. I hike the trails when I can. I have a thing for long rides in the kayak during the summer. I’m not a full-on couch potato…

I went vegan 12 years ago. At first, I was full on vegan. Then, the cheese monster edged it’s way back into my life. Then, I found no matter what I did, I was an overweight vegetarian.

It was frustrating. I felt I was doing all that I should to keep from gaining weight but it was happening anyway. Add to that, I felt like crap. No amount of sleep seemed like enough. I was often in pain when I slept and could only breathe clearly when in certain positions. I was, at times, a bit short of breath. I felt like I had a brain cloud (yes, like Tom Hanks in Joe vs. The Volcano)…
